Pirated Books

This Post looks like the author is supporting the Pirated Books Sale in Chennai. I am 100% sure he is not. His comment says otherwise.

I did comment on that Post and here is the comment that i made. Please read the post before you read the below lines, it will make more sense.

Do you think it is right to let these shops sell pirated books. Think the amount of money the publisher is loosing when you start buying books from thee sleazy shops.

Hands down support the Second hand books and those shops should not be removed but IMHO the pirated books should need to be dealt with 100%.

You also see these shops around Spencer Plaza considering that it is a big time tourist spot - at least for the hordes of foreigners who seem to be coming to Chennai - it gives a very bad outlook for India and the publishing industry.

If you look at the Amount that you pay if you buy a book in its original edition i.e. in UK and the amount you pay if you purchase in India is already a pittance and we should not further squeeze those publishers and authors.

IMHO i feel that we should get a law against these pirated books sellers they are a big business and it is not very easy to print the books and who ever prints it does pour a good amount of investment into this and am sure he does get a good return on Investment as he does not have to pay all those royalties :)

when u compare with uk it is cheap, but at Rs 300 a book i really cannot afford too many books, in india the prices are still high by indian standards, and the pirated books make them affordable, if books were cheaper piracy wouldnt exist.

there is a publisher of textbooks called Margham publications, they price their books in such a manner that it doesnt make sense to xerox books, and since second hand books are often outdated students are forced to buy new books, such pricing mechanisms would wipe out piracy, until that happens, i am a suporter of piracy

Have you heard about the Eastern Economy Edition. I will give you an Example.

The Book System Analysis and Design using UML is priced at 40 Pounds which is 3000 Rs and the EEE edition for the book is 275 Rs.

if we continue doing the Piracy Stuff these Eastern Economy Editions will Stop and we will be forced to buy it at 3000 Rs. (Pirated prints come out of these EEE books.)

Just my few cents ...
